Teachers to refrain from online teaching from Monday

The Ceylon Teacher Services Union (CTSU) today decided to refrain from conducting online teaching practices from Monday (12) against the Government’s move to direct Ceylon Teachers’ Union (CTU) General Secretary Joseph Stalin and 15 others for forcible quarantine after being released on bail and until providing a solution for online teaching, CTSU Chief Secretary Mahinda Jayasinghe said.

He said CTU General Secretary Joseph Stalin and 15 others from the group of 33 arrested for staging a demonstration in Battaramulla had been directed to quarantine after being released on bail.

The Inter University Students’ Federation (IUSF), the CTU and the Frontline Socialist Party (FSP) had organized the protest against the proposed General Sir John Kotelawala National Defence University Bill on Tuesday (8).

"The power of the trade unions cannot be supressed by sending them to quarantine. Therefore, all teachers' trade unions have decided to refrain from online teaching practices as the teachers used to continue with teaching practices with their own efforts and using their own facilities and emoluments.

There were many issues when conducting online teaching. We informed the government about the issues but no response has been received yet to solve those issues. (Chaturanga Samarawickrama)
