UNP Deputy Leader Ruwan Wijewardene today urged the government to impose a lock down and introduce a convenient system for the people to obtain their essentials.
“Government should accept the responsibility for the consequences if it fails to impose a lock down and dismiss the suggestion made by the medical experts,” Mr. Wijewardene said in a statement.
“Advice of medical experts are continuously dismissed,” he said.
“People are laid along corridors in hospitals. Some patients are turned back from hospitals. Private hospitals are also overloaded. Around 2500 people are admitted to hospitals daily. The COVID task force had not heeded the request made by medical experts to go for a two week lockdown,” he added.
“What our leader said was correct. Health authorities should be given the powers to make decisions with regard to the pandemic. However the response was completely different. One should not look at a person’s finger when he or she is pointing at the moon. Our criticism is not aimed at capturing power but on saving lives,” he also said.
Mr. Wijewardene also urged the government to resolve the gas and milk powder shortage amicably. “Both Litro and Laufs gas are not available today,” he also said.(Yohan Perera)
