Labour and Foreign Employment Minister Manusha Nanayakkara today said that the Japanese government has agreed to help Sri Lanka to establish a vocational training centre targeting the automobile industry to train local youth for jobs in the automobile industry in Japan.

The decision was announced following a meeting with a high-level Japanese diplomatic delegation at the Ministry.

"Those who undergo the training successfully at the centre, will be eligible for direct job opportunities in Japan. "This initiative is expected to bring more job opportunities to Sri Lankan workers in the automobile sector in Japan," the Minister said.

Also said the attention was focused on establishing this vocational training centre aimed at jobs in Japan and starting it as a joint venture between the public and private sectors. After the opening of the centre, the Japanese delegation highlighted the possibility of directly opening job opportunities in Japan to all those who had been trained there.

There is a need to recruit 6.5 million workers from foreign countries for jobs in Japan in the next few years, and views were exchanged at length regarding how Sri Lankan workers could contribute to meeting that labour demand. (Chaturanga Pradeep Samarawickrama)

We have been running Engineering faculties at our Universities for decades and turning out scores of new Engineers every year. But still we never produced anything in Sri Lanka and now Japan is coming forward to build a technical institute to train our youths for possible engineering employment in Japan. This is the point , we don’t need University education to create Engineers, what Sri Lanka need is Technical Colleges to train “Practical” Engineers to produce things in Sri Lanka.

Education linked to employment, a very good idea in the current context where there is no system for spotting talent locally and even if there is such youth are sometimes unable to find suitable employment in the country after training

Education should be aligned with job market whether it is in Sri Lanka or Japan. This is very good initiative please keep it up, until youth get the benefits out of this.
