The heavy showers have lashed most parts of the country and water levels were rising at several gauging stations of the Kelani river, Kalu river, Nilwala river, Maha Oya and Attanagalu Oya may cause minor floods, the Disaster Management Centre warned.
As a result, the water levels at the Kelani River gauge stations (Nagalagam street, Hanwella, and Glencourse) are rising and changing in minor levels.
The water levels at the gauging stations at Kalu Ganga (Magura, Millakanda) are increasing and a minor flood alert has been issued. At the Panadugama gauging station in the Nilwala river was increasing and a minor flood level warning was issued. The water levels of the Badalgama, Giriulla gauging stations at Maha Oya and Dunamale gauging station at Attanagalu Oya were seen increasing and cautioned about minor floods.
Meanwhile, the Meteorology Department said that heavy showers exceeding 50 mm could be expected in some places in Western and Sabaragamuwa provinces and in Kandy, Nuwara-Eliya, Galle and Matara districts.
There would be sporadic spells of shower in the Western, Sabaragamuwa and North-Western provinces and in Kandy, Nuwara-Eliya, Galle and Matara districts.
Also there may be several spells of shower in the Northern and North-central provinces, as well as in a few areas in the Uva and Eastern provinces during the evening or night.
Therefore, the general public are cautioned to take adequate precautions to safeguard themselves from damages caused by gusty winds and lightning during thundershowers. (Chaturanga Samarawickrama)
