Weekend session of parliament to approve domestic debt restructuring

A special party leaders' meeting is to be held on Tuesday June 27 to decide on holding a special weekend session of Parliament on Saturday July 01 and Sunday July 02 to get Parliament’s approval for the domestic debt restructuring process, a spokesman from the Speaker's office said.

“The party leaders will meet on June 27 and the final decision on holding a special weekend session will be decided on that day,” the spokesman said.

It was reliably learnt that Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa had questioned the plan to hold a weekend session and has stressed that a final decision has to be made by the party leaders.

The Speaker has also stressed the importance of holding a party leaders' meeting next week.

President Ranil Wickremesinghe, during his tour to the UK had stated that Sri Lanka will complete the debt restructuring by September this year. (Yohan Perera)

At a time when the party leaders themselves do not know who is in their team or not due to the recent abandonment of the party by MPs, how can the party leaders meet and decide on various Parliamentary issues? The speaker is trying to run the Parliament without the consensus of most MPs.

Why is Sajith suddenly taking an interest in the IMF after having boycotted the voting on it in parliament? Is he scared Dr Harsha and others will breakaway from SJB if he continues to boycott? From last week it is obvious he has taken a different stance than earlier. As for Ranil, after having come so far without the SJB he won't care if SJB is in or out now.

Future government should sell this very expensive parliament to a hotel project and use a basic government building as parliment. At the next parliament election do not send anyone over 45 to parliament.

At the same time, pay attention on ANTI-CORRUPTION BILL as well which is much more important than anything else.

So sad that the opposition MP's find it too much of an ask for them to attend Parliament over a weekend to debate a significant and critical matter. Is this politics or selfishness. Simply irresponsible and sad. They clearly don't want the debt restructuring resolved speedily and would rather it drag on. One would have thought that with the likes of Eran and Harsha that Sajith could have been influenced otherwise to have the national interest at heart. But sad to see otherwise.
