Zahira awarded points, disciplinary action against Trinity

Zahira College has been awarded the points of their Under 19 inter-school match against Trinity College which did not take place as scheduled on July 29, after the Trinitians said they were unable to take the field due to medical reasons concerning their players.

The decision to award the six winning points to Zahira was taken by the Sri Lanka Schools’ Rugby Association (SLSRFA), in line with the rules set out in the tournament manual given to all the rugby playing schools.

Apart from this decision, Saliya Alexander, the coordinator of the SLSRFA, speaking to the Daily Mirror said, “The disciplinary committee of the SLSRFA will meet on August 6 (Saturday) at 2.00 p.m. at the Ministry of Education to decide the next course of action to be taken due to the pull out of Trinity without a valid reason.”

He further stated that letters to the masters in charge and prefect of games of the two schools have been sent to attend the inquiry and emphasized that stern action is to be taken against any side pulling out or not playing a match without a valid reason, including future suspension.

The win awarded to Zahira saw them shooting up to overall sixth position and will be eligible to participate in the knockout tournament which is scheduled to be played after the completion of the league. (M. Shamil Amit)

What's the big deal? When the Trinity team arrives in Colombo for their Brabdy second leg, issue a warrant and take all ten players to the CID for questioning and keep them there until the match is over. This will cure any stomach flue or any other ailment they have.

Amazing how effective these are. The decision was made just before the battle of Bradby.St. Peters, which played last year with ineligible players, is permitted to play this year, but the Trinity, which had players who were sick and unable to play, will face disciplinary punishment. Trinity will undoubtedly revisit the courts on this.

9 of the Trinity players were sick due to food poisoning. 6 players were very sick. Trinity is one of the best disciplined schools in the country. SLSRFA should know the facts before coming to conclusions or revealing punishment. Do not make unprofessional statements, which exposes the stupidity of officials.

It's NOT the best decision taken by SLSRFA period!! Replay is the best option!! For God sake this is kids who're sick, the teenagers shouldn't be punished because they were sick!!

Medical certificates must be produced as evidence and according to formalities. Trinity's standard of discipline is commendable unlike Isipathana who want to win, nook or crook. By the way, that rocket Rajapaksha was spared after assaulting the referee and Isipathana was pardoned by Rajapaksha after SLSRFA suspended them once the opponents were assaulted.

"Without a valid reason?" the reason is well documented and given to match officials on the day. Trinity must take this case to the higher level. Complete unethical by the SLSRFA.

Rugby has become the most indiscipline sport that produce thugs irrespective of schools .This must be stopped ,no thuggery should be allowed in any sport or school .strict punishment must be implemented . nowadays disciplining the children and teaching them meditation ,mindfulness , practicing unity and equality has gone out of the schooling system.no school is superior ,every school must be treated same. only our country has this sickness in all other countries a school is just a school no one give any damn about its name

The best course of action as i see, is to award the points to Zahira College, after all their team was ready to play and that's the right thing to do. However, instead of leaving it there, take a step forward and ask both schools to discuss and decide on date for an exhibition match which will allow us all, the spectators, fans, ardent supporters and the back seat critics to enjoys a good game of rugby.
