A body consisting of general public, clergy and environmental activists called the People’s Campaign against Port City carried out a campaign in Negombo to educate fisher folk in the area about the possible negative impact the Port City project could have on their livelihoods. The Port City is a Chinese-funded US $ 1.4 billion project aiming to build a city on reclaimed land adjacent to the Galle Face Green. The project is currently halted by the new government due to the non-availability of a proper environmental impact assessment report.
