AAC educates children on importance of wearing safety helmets



Under the UN Decade of Action 2021 – 2030 in Sri Lanka, the Automobile Association of Ceylon (AAC) is now conducting a Road Safety Programme, specially in rural schools, promoting the need for children to wear safety helmets.

During this weekend, the programme was aimed at educating children, parents, teachers motor cyclists and many others in Horana on the importance of children wearing helmets.

The Police Officer from the Traffic Head Quarters had lectures and demonstrations on the safety of wearing the helmet for children when they travel with their parents on a two-wheeler.

The purpose of this project by the Association is to overcome the fatalities and injuries of motorcyclist. In the year 2022, it was recorded that there had been 806 deaths among the motor cyclists of which 411 deaths were below the age of 18 years and also there were disabilities amounting to 5,133.

Traffic Police Officers in Horana, assisted the Automobile Association by collecting the required data of children from various schools in the area who do not wear a helmet when they travel on the Motorcycle.

Ananda Dangalla – Vice President and Devapriya Hettiarachchi- Secretary of the Automobile Association together with Panawala – OIC Police Station Horana, Dayal Kariyawasam of the Traffic Police Head Quarters attended the event. The handing over ceremony was held at the Police Station, Horana and many schools in the area children and parents attended this function. Traffic Police – Horana donated helmets to 50 children without helmets.
