Reputed consumer goods retailer Abans PLC yesterday partnered with EWIS Colombo Limited (ECL), the only original equipment manufacturer in Sri Lanka to produce and market consumer electronic devices.
ECL Chairman and CEO Sanjeewa Wickramanayaka and Abans PLC Chief Marketing Officer Buddhika Dharmawardane signed the partnership agreement on electronic devices original device manufacturing (ODM).
This agreement comes into play at a very crucial time in the country’s economy. Abans and ECL have taken the lead to promote local manufacturing in a bid to revamp the struggling economy. The renowned retailer and original equipment manufacturer stands to save the country a considerable amount of foreign exchange in the process by reducing imports.
Abans and ECL hope to validate the ‘made in Sri Lanka’ tag by producing and marketing products manufactured locally to international standards. This will enable local consumers, who have been deprived of the privilege of imported electronic and electrical goods, to buy ‘Sri Lankan-made’ products at affordable prices through the convenience of Abans’ robust retail network. Abans PLC, the flagship company of the Abans group, is a leading retail brand in the country, with a 40-strong brand portfolio and is the sole agent in Sri Lanka for numerous world-leading electronic and home appliances brands.
ECL, an EWIS group company, is Sri Lanka’s first and only local original device manufacturer with a proven track record of nine years in designing and developing innovative device solutions for the consumer and industrial segments in Sri Lanka. The manufacturing facility located in Sooriyawewa, Hambantota, has a state-of-the-art 25,000 square foot modem and futuristic facility.
This manufacturing facility is accredited with the ISO 9001:2015 and ISO 14001:2004 certifications and has the capability to manufacture computers, laptops, tablet computers, televisions, smart boards, mobile phones and other consumer electronic products. All products manufactured in this plant comply with the international standards such as CE, FCC and RoHS. ECL has been recognised as a best work place in Sri Lanka for 2021 and as a best work place for woman for the last three years consecutively. Eighty percent of the ECL employees are women.
