Comfort Mattress Lanka (Pvt) Ltd. has announced a US$25 million investment to set up a sponge mattress manufacturing facility at the Hambantota International Port’s (HIP) industrial park, becoming the first investor to take advantage of HIP’s recent push to expand its container operations.

The project will see a 62,000-square-metre factory built under a 30-year renewable lease agreement with the Hambantota International Port Group (HIPG).

The factory, aimed at exporting to markets in the U.S., Europe, and Canada, is expected to handle 7,000 TEUs annually, with raw materials sourced from Southeast Asia and China.

“The container yard we are developing will handle transshipment and strengthen HIP’s positioning as a gateway port. We anticipate heightened interest in the industrial park over the coming years, and as Sri Lanka’s economy stabilises, we foresee industries outside the port taking advantage of HIP’s strategic location,” said HIPG CEO Wilson Qu, noting the significance of the project for HIP’s vision.

The Comfort Mattress Lanka investment is expected to create new job opportunities for locals, with a focus on training youth in technical and mechanical skills in Hambantota and nearby areas.

Qu noted that the inclusion of Comfort Mattress Lanka in HIPG’s industrial portfolio, highlights the group’s ability to attract global businesses, reinforcing its commitment to cooperation and mutual benefit.

“This collaboration reflects HIPG’s strategic vision to drive sustainable growth and strengthen Sri Lanka’s position as a modern trade and industrial hub while contributing to the nation’s economic prosperity,” he said.
