MAS Active Ocean Strainer continues commitment to sustainability

On October 30th, 2024, MAS Active, in collaboration with the MAS Foundation for Change, reached a significant milestone in their ongoing environmental efforts with the installation of the 60th Ocean Strainer at the Urban Wetland Park in Nawala. This marks the 9th Ocean Strainer of 12 in the 42-Day Challenge.

This Ocean Strainer is an innovative solution to Sri Lanka’s plastic pollution in water ways, protecting urban wetlands and preserving biodiversity, including migratory water birds. By intercepting plastic and non-biodegradable waste before it reaches critical ecosystems, it ensures clean, undisturbed habitats and free-flowing water.

However, the impact of the Ocean Strainer goes beyond waste interception. In addition to the installation, there is a monitoring process to collect, segregate, and record the waste intercepted by the strainer. This ensures not only the immediate cleanliness of the waterways but also the long-term sustainability of the project.

Local communities near the Canal have struggled with temporary barriers that fail during floods, releasing waste back into the eco system. This Ocean Strainer offers a durable solution for consistent waste management, improving the wetland ecosystem year-round by intercepting plastic and non-biodegradable waste before it reaches critical ecosystems like Kotte Marsh and Kirulapone Canal.

The Ocean Strainer not only improves water quality but also enhances the aesthetic and recreational value of urban wetlands. Cleaner waterways create vibrant spaces for activities like walking, birdwatching, and boating, transforming polluted areas into thriving green spaces for people to enjoy.

Rather than simply stating the need to minimize water pollution, it is essential to act by implementing effective solutions to address pressing environmental challenges. The Ocean Strainer implies this proactive approach, ensuring that tangible measures are taken to manage waste and promote ecological health.

Moreover, the project has sparked heightened awareness within local communities about responsible waste management and environmental stewardship. This partnership among MAS Active and the MAS Foundation for Change exemplifies the power of collective action in addressing urgent environmental challenges and inspires broader participation in sustainable practices.

As the project expands, the collaboration highlights how innovative solutions can make a significant impact on environmental conservation.

By combining technology, community engagement, and sustained efforts, MAS Active and the MAS Foundation for Change are making strides in preserving wetland ecosystems vital for biodiversity and local communities.
