New HDFC Bank Chairman assumes duties

The new HDFC Bank Chairman P.J. Jayasinghe assumed duties on October 28, 2024. 


Jayasinghe served at Bank of Ceylon (BOC), the country’s renowned state-owned commercial bank, from May 1977 to August 2015. By the time of his retirement, he was a Deputy General Manager.


His impressive career includes significant experience in various areas of banking. As a key management person at BOC, he handled branch banking, overseas branches, corporate credit, recovery, treasury, human resource management, support service areas and has functioned as Secretary to Corporate Management Committee, Credit Committee and as a Member of the Asset and Liabilities Committee, Trustee Board of BOC Employees’ Pension Fund and BOC Employees’ Provident Fund. Further, he covered up duties of general manager. Thereby, he gained a vast amount of experience in all-important areas in the banking and finance industry.


He discharged his duties as an Independent Non-Executive Director of four subsidiary/associate companies of BOC, dealing with real estate, property development and hotel industry as the bank’s nominee. He also contributed to the education and professional development of the banking sector over a long period by being a member of the Governing Board of the Institute of Bankers of Sri Lanka.


He served 13 months in the LFC sector as Chairman/Non-Executive Director of TFC, as invited by the Central Bank of Sri Lanka. He also carried out CEO functions of the Institute of Bankers of Sri Lanka from July 2017 to 31.12.2018 as Director General. 


He graduated from the Sri Jayewardenepura University, securing a B.Com (Special) Degree. He is an Associate of the Institute of Bankers of Sri Lanka. He also holds a Higher National Diploma in Human Resource Management from the National Institute of Business Management. He has participated in a large number of local and overseas training programmes to expand the horizon of knowledge and the skills relating to banking and finance.
