The Sri Lanka Tourism Alliance yesterday sent a strong message to foreign embassies regarding travel advisories citing possible terrorist attacks, which could lead to serious setbacks for the local tourism sector.

As the U.S. advisory is amplified by the United Kingdom and subsequent international media coverage, the Alliance expressed deep concerns about the potential impact on the industry.

“Is this some kind of cruel joke being played on Sri Lanka and its vital tourism industry, crucial to economic recovery, by a group of foreign embassies?” the Sri Lanka Tourism Alliance Chairman Malik J. Fernando questioned.

It highlighted that Sri Lankan authorities had already implemented security measures, made two arrests, and ensured that no incidents occurred.

Tourism stakeholders have voiced concerns over the timing of these advisories, as Sri Lanka was looking forward to a strong winter season to boost an industry that has been struggling to recover from economic challenges and a recent visa processing crisis.

“The uncalibrated response from foreign embassies displays callousness towards Sri Lanka and its tourism sector, which plays a critical role in uplifting millions in rural communities still recovering from recent serious economic setbacks,” Fernando said issuing a statement.

The Alliance pointed out that the U.S. alert about Arugam Bay was amplified by Israeli media, which incorrectly suggested that the entire country was unsafe for Israeli travellers.

The UK advisory followed shortly after, stating that “terrorists are very likely to attempt attacks in Sri Lanka,” which the Alliance argues was based solely on the U.S. alert.

“Without a shred of additional evidence, merely citing the earlier U.S. alert about Arugam Bay, the UK implied all of Sri Lanka was dangerous,” Fernando noted.

The Alliance asserted that each booking is vital to Sri Lanka’s recovery.

“We are hopeful that prospective guests will see beyond the smoke and mirrors and continue to book Sri Lanka,” Fernando said.
