Geocycle, a subsidiary of Holcim (Lanka) Ltd, a member of LafargeHolcim, recently signed a vital memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Local Government Department for North Western Province (NWP) to dispose of all non-biodegradable waste in the area.

The MoU, which was entered into by NWP Chief Minister Dharmasiri Dassanayake, NWP Local Government Commissioner Buwaneka Herath, Geocycle General Manager Randeewa Malalasooriya and Geocycle Strategy and Business Development Manager Sajith Edirisooriya sees the collaboration of 33 local councils in the province. Geocycle has through this MoU pledged to dispose of all submitted non-biodegradable waste, such as polythene and plastic through green-friendly processes in order to alleviate the current stress on the environment.

“This pilot project, which first saw its beginnings in 2014, has proved to be increasingly successful. Geocycle aims to better livelihoods and protect the environment. This will be a long-lasting project that will almost immediately alleviate stress on and better the lives of the incumbents of the NWP,” commented Malalasooriya.

During his speech at the official signing of the MoU, Dassanayake said, “Holcim Lanka is a prominent business provider in the nation and is a key industry leader, particularly in the province. They have always been integral to community projects and sustainable initiatives such as this and we thank them for their support.”

This first project will be a cornerstone for Holcim’s strategic plan, seeing the erection of four new collection centres in the NWP as in the long-run to provide a sustainable solution for the entire NWP making it completely pollutant free. This is to be the first of many similar projects that will also be established in the Gampaha, Kalutara, Anuradhapura and Puttalam Districts.
