Throughout the ages of history, humans have evolved as omnivores, to subsist on a varied diet that includes vegetables, fruits, grains, fish and meat. Of all these, meat has a special significance because it was the main type of food for humans long before the introduction of agriculture. The human digestive system is well evolved to make full use of the healthy fats, proteins and various other nutrients found only in meat.

In prehistoric times, early humans lived in hunter-gatherer societies where they depended mainly on meat, gained by hunting. In time, they evolved to hunt in groups to maximize efficiency. Even though hunting was an often dangerous affair, on some days the results of the hunt would be far more than they could eat and there would also be days when no animals could be found for meat. And so early on, humans learned to preserve some of the hunted meat to consume later.

The organisation of all this, the hunting groups, the preservation, storage and distribution of food, led to the development of early society. These early societies also discovered that they could grow food close to their homes and villages, which led to the beginning of the agricultural society. As one development led to another, these early societies developed trades, where each specific trade would benefit the rest of society in a specialized manner. One of the specialized trades to develop from all this was the trade of meat, where hunters would hunt as a profession and supply meat to the rest of village, for which they would receive some item or service of value to them.

Nutritional value
Apart from its historical significance, meat also plays a vital role in nutrition, especially in the supply of protein. Protein plays a significant role in the building and repair of muscles and bones. It is a collection of amino acids and there are nine types of amino acids that the body cannot produce on its own. Therefore, these amino acids must be absorbed from the food that we eat. A complete supply of protein is a food which contains all these amino acids in significant amounts.

The most efficient complete supply of protein comes from meat. Even of all meat, the most nutritiously beneficial are the white meats, such as fish and various poultry, especially chicken.  Chicken is especially important in this regard as it is lower in fat and higher in nutrition than most other meats. Apart from protein, it also contains vitamins A, E, K and B12, elements such as folate and minerals such as calcium, iron, magnesium and selenium (source: http://nutritiondata.self.com/facts/poultry-products/703/2).

Chicken also contains compounds that boost immunity, which is why chicken soup is often prescribed as the go-to health food when faced with colds and flu. Also being rich in vitamin B6, it plays an important role in preventing heart attack. Vitamin B6 helps by lowering the levels of homocysteine, one of the key components linked to an increased risk of heart attack.

Besides, chicken is also a good source of niacin that helps lower cholesterol, a risk factor for heart disease development. The American Heart Association also recommends the consumption of chicken over red meat since it contains a less amount of saturated fats and is also a good source of omega-3 fatty acids that exhibit beneficial cardiovascular effects. Along with all its health benefits, chicken is the easiest type of meat to obtain.

As it doesn’t need vast expenses of land to roam about and has been domesticated throughout human history, all the way back to the beginning of the agricultural society, chicken is easy to be raised as a bird and easy to prepare and preserve as a meat. In present times, it is much easier to purchase meat in the market, while advances in technology have ensured that the meat can be obtained in secure packages, which further help preserve it for longer.
