Decision on vehicle imports in second week of August

Colombo, July 13 (Daily Mirror) The final decision on lifting the ban on vehicle imports will be made by the second week of August, Finance State Minister Ranjith Siambalapitiya said.

He said that the committee assigned to review this issue met on July 4 and plans to present its final report to the Cabinet by the second week of August.

The Minister believes that the import of vehicles will be feasible without negatively affecting the country's exchange rate and will prioritize people's needs.

The import order will be public transport vehicles, goods transport vehicles, alternative vehicles, general vehicles and private vehicles.

Additionally, the Minister informed Parliament that the Cabinet has approved the import of 1,000 vehicles for the tourism industry, but none have been imported yet. This includes 250 buses and 750 vans, which require permission from the Tourism Ministry.

Importation of vehicles except for essential services should be taboo as it will not help the public who are grappling in their livelihoods. Always decisions should be made where there is a contribution in coming out of the bankruptcy problem otherwise the country will be burdening the public who are not able to make ends meet whilst the super rich will put a show off their profligacy in importing latest vehicles whilst the public are undergoing severe hardships in travelling by trains, buses etc. The current strikes which maybe politically instigated or otherwise is because of the public and private sector unable to bear the spiralling inflation. These monies for the import of vehicles could be used to lower inflation.

Anyone (not just licensed dealers) should be allowed to import any type of vehicle, provided they are purchased with their own dollars and also customs and VAT are paid in dollars. This would benefit the state significantly. A large number of people in Sri Lanka have access to dollars, be they exporters, migrant workers, people with friends or family living abroad and also foreigners on residence visas.

We want to ascertain is this also another false election pledge? Besides this government banned the importation of all types of since covid pandemic. Thus just after the pandemic the country was defaulted and bankrupted. Furthermore the government officers who were privileged to import the vehicles under their concession vehicle permits were stranded. As we believe the government will make all possible arrangements to import the vehicle under the pretext of this mechanism in order to make their stooges and cronies consoled

The actions hurriedly taken to bring vehicles for ELECTION works for Ranil's ROGUES to carry out illegal activities such as operating Under World Group to KILL political opponents. The leaders of the world should stop financial assistace for Sri Lanka until the stable government is installed after the election.
