Meta sued for storing biometric identifiers

Facebook parent company Meta is being sued by the Texas attorney general for “storing millions of biometric identifiers".

International media organisations reported that the social media giant is taken to courts for unlawfully collecting biometric data on Texans for commercial purposes, without their informed consent.

Some of the biometric identifiers are retina or iris scans, voiceprints, or a record of hand and face geometry, which are contained in photos and videos people upload to its platforms Facebook and Instagram.

In November 2021, Meta said it was shutting down its facial recognition programme and deleting its data.
