The Railways Department is prepairing to operate with the vintage wooden compartments with steam engines as tourist attraction in view to boost  tourism in the country.

The department still owns three steam engines of B1 and B2 models in running condition and that four wooden paneled passenger compartments, similar to those of the colonial era are now being turned out at the Ratamalana Railway Workshop under the supervision of the Superintendent - Engineer (Projects).

The first of the steam locomotive hauled train with the vintage wooden  compartments will run from Colombo Fort to Ambepussa which was the destination of the historic inaugural journey of the Sri Lanka’s railway, the then Ceylon Government Railways (CGR). Pix by Kushan Pathiraja
