Against legalising prostitution under NPP government
A protest was held in front of the head office of the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) in Pelawatta against the statement by National People's Power (NPP) executive member Samanmalee Gunasinghe over legalising prostitution under their government. Sexworkers are very vulnerable. When you legalize prostitution they will be more visible and therefore it is easier to protect them. Acceptation of this oldest profession will benefit everyone. In my country sexworkers have to pay tax, have medical checks and their own union.

But I do not mean the redlight districts, because in my opinion it is degrading to display sexworkers in a window as a consumption item. But still if that is their own choice, let them be.

yes, they anyway hide and run the business It is advisable to make it visible to regulate and monitor their health to prevent STDs - Go underground means a high risk of spreading disease ( STD - Sexually Transmitting disease and drug use ) - This business can't be eliminated and ends with the worlds end

Yes, good idea. But should Sri Lanka legalise it because you have done it so?. Why it is illegal in many states of USA? In Sri Lanka only a very few people are paying money for sex. But this is a very sensitive matter in many countries.

JVP is a secretive organisation, they strategically issue statements to assess the pulse of the public. This I see as one of them. NPP is a fictitious name of JVP to cover-up as mask all their previous aggression 1971, 1988-1989. Public need a careful assessment before voting, AKD's speeches and talks attracts people. As majority cant understand the real status of the country, JVP trying hard to capitalize on surface issues seen viz: catching the thieves, thieves enjoying lives, and increase of prices of day to day basis needs etc.

No one knows how they picked up this notion. Most probably they have picked up a part of a quote. Yesterday, 22rd, General Secretary of NPP, Tilvin Silva held a press conference to clarify what has been said by Ms. Gunasinghe and elaborated in great length what their stance is about those engaged in prostitution. The conclusion of his stmt was, that the NPP will NEVER legalise prostitution while eradicating the core reasons that forces some women to engage in it, like lack of alternate opportunities to live, economic hardships to thwart bringing up children etc. These NJP members are clearly mislead, misdirected or misinformed.

Prostitution is the oldest profession in the world. It is not going to cease simply because saffron clad hypocrites who prefer boys want it to. It is akin to shutting liquor shops on Poya days to prevent people drinking. Drug taking is still illegal. How successful has that strategy been for the country ?
