They are not poor. Just another vendor like in any country doing an honest business as there is a demand for their products.

Independence from what ???? From a prosperous tranquil country in 1948 to a bankrupt, corrupt nation in 2024.

The country would have prospered very much had the BRITISHERS were NOT left us. We still depend on TEA EXPORTS to earn FOREIGN EXCHAGE which was initiated by them. They constructed RAILWAY LINES which is still used. To maintain these rail lune, we depend on India. Bandaranayake created only RACISM.

I wish to investigate on what conditions and terms that Ceylon was granted independence? In 1815 the King of Hela-diva (Ceylon and Sri Lanka later) signed an agreement with the British when the country was handed down to England. Likewise, was there any agreement signed by the British and the local (Ceylon) authorities (persons)?

Hela Diva? What is that? He was not king of Hela DIva but just the king of Kandyan kingdom and a Tamil, who was deported back to Salem. The other two kingdoms Jaffna and Kotte that were originally, captured by the Portuguese, and later the Dutch were already under the control of the British, therefore the Kandyan convetion or treaty was just in regard to handing over the Kingdom of Kandy to the British and had nothing to do with the rest of the island. Get your facts and history correct. Please also research and learn the actual origin of your family name, which if of recent South Indian Tamil origin.

independence can only be commemorated once our country gets rid of the existing political culture.

Last 55 years we NEVER had any freedom and why should we celebrate Independence!?? Last few decades SL was run by oppressive regimes!! The politicians bankrupt this country and Then made SL the living HELL with no food no water no electricity no fuel no gas no milk powder no medicine. The voters should do the right thing by electing NPP government. Forget about the past, most රතු සහෝදරයන් was born after 1987 therefore they're not part of any uprising or any movement and some of them were not even teenagers so 98% of NPP members are not responsible for what happened in the past. THIS is the New breed that gonna put SL And it's economy in the right path. All you have to do is elect NPP with an overwhelming majority to put SL in the prosperity pathway!!

The people of this country should mourn the independence as it's only another function for the politicians and a huge amount of money spent to entertain them.

Looking at the comments, can see how shortsighted or ignored. Please note all these politicians appointed by people.
Also, who ever come to power, still the same government servants will be working with these politicians. What can you expect??

Independence to loot, rob, murder, molest, rampage, and you name it.

Ranil is not worried whether the country can show prosperity on Independance Day. He only wants a
THAMASHA FOR HIM TO PRESIDE OVER and have a Boru Show.

When part of the country is still under a complete military occupation with one soldier for every two Tamils, where is the freedom? Remember, the freedom you are celebrating now is for Sinhalese only, not for others.
