Today, Buddhism in Sri Lanka is in dire straits mainly due to a section of clergy openly engaged in activities totally unbecoming for not only for Buddhist clergy but even for laymen as well. Greed for power, money, favors and perks have made them engage in politics and related activities, resulting in total deterioration of values, discipline and focus amongst them. Even some monks in high positions have become willing pawns of unscrupulous politicians who get their dirty work done through them. Some have even started criticizing such monks in open forums lately, and the way those monks have retaliated would make the average Buddhists in this country hide in shame.
