Exploring Bali’s iconic Garuda Wisnu Kencana

Popular Sri Lankan singer Umaria Sinhawansa, along with a group of journalists on an official visit to Indonesia, visited Garuda Wisnu Kencana Cultural Park located in Ungasan, Badung on the island of Bali, Indonesia. The park is devoted to the Hindu god Vishnu and his mount, Garuda, the mythical bird who became his companion.

Designed to be Indonesia’s tallest statue, Garuda Wisnu Kencana was inspired by a story from Hindu mythology about the search for Amrita (the elixir of life).

The monument's construction was not without controversy. Religious authorities on the island expressed concerns that its massive size might disrupt the spiritual balance of the island, and its commercial nature was deemed inappropriate. However, some groups support the project as it could serve as a new tourist attraction on barren land.

The Embassy of the Republic of Indonesia in Colombo, Sri Lanka, organized the visit from June 19–27, 2024, to promote tourism between the two countries. (Pix by Darshana Sanjeewa Balasuriya from Bali)
