The Marine Environment Protection Authority (MEPA) today launched a program to clean up the coastlines. The project is expected to be carried out using modern beach cleaning machinery received through foreign aid. The initial program was held on the beach of Crow Island, Mattakkuliya. The Chief of Staff of the President, Navy Chiefs, Chairman of the Maritime Environment Protection Authority, and heads of non-governmental organizations participated in this program. This IS an excellent move. However what are they to do with all the 'TRASH' they collect?? Let us hope they do NOT re dump them in a neighbouring Beach as they would normally do!! Instead they should ask the KADAWATHA Municipal Council to assist in disposing off this accumulated trash. Then the job CAN be classified as 'EXCELLENT'!!

Encourage people to Re-USE Shopping bags when going for Super Markets. This can be done by asking SUPER MARKETS to change some amount extra every time New Shopping Bags are used. Its done in Australia. Secondly educate people on the important of cleanliness.

So much technology ..so much investment ..still these sweepers are still at the teething stage ..an innovation that is yet to be studied to realize how environment safe they would be ..some advocate beach patrol to fine the offenders that pollute the beaches ,tho' the debris from the long shore drift could be hard to trace . Should we not rush in to use technology on a very fragile environment.specially those tractor wheels that can plow the ground ..

That's great .Hope this continues island wide in popular beaches will do wonders to tourism, many other basic things they can do, mobile toilets (can charge)receptacles for garbage etc
