Thai Pongal is the most important of all Tamil festivals since the time immemorial. It was called Tamil Festival as all the Tamils belonged to one religion, Hinduism. The first of the three European invaders of North and East of Sri Lanka,the Portuguese who converted some Tamils to Catholic religion , strictly passed rules to abolish all Tamil festivals and burnt down hundreds of Hindu Temples in Jaffna. The second and the third invaders,the Dutch and the British reluctantly allowed the Tamils to restart their Tamil festivals but demanded that they be called Hindu festivals and not Tamil festivals to support the Tamils whom they had converted to their Christian religion. Now, all three White invaders have gone, we are free to characterise Thai Pongal as a Tamil Festival and not just a Hindu Festival. The same applies to all Buddhist festivals in Sri Lanka, they too should be classed as Sinhalese Festivals. We need to breakdown all impositions made against us by the White invaders.
