Comments - Loving Sri Lanka....

They should get their heads examined ....or they should try actually "living" here and then let us see if they are still "loving" Sri Lanka - with our without flags. Easy to wave flags when they are given to you as part of a tourist promotion stunt.

@jeanne, anyone can love any place they visit. They dont need to get their heads examined. If not for them visitors, we would probably need a gun to our heads to put us out of our misery.

Ganesh, there are many countries in the world when you visit as a tourist you have a perspective of the land and its people. However, when you want to live there pay taxes, raise a family, provide a roof over the heads and put food on the table- things can look quite different. I have lived and worked in seven different countries in the world and they are considered one of the best- BUT ask my family they may have a different perspective.
Coming to the tourists in SL, most of them we would name as 'trash white'- meaning coming from low socio-economic class. Unfortunately, these fall into the tourists censes BUT they really do little to bring in foreign $. However, the SL government is run by a bunch of nit-wits who never will see the light of day.

@Ganesh : I am not sure how we personally benefit from tourist dollars. Is your life any better because of it? Or, could it be because we were recently rescued by the IMF?? I'll leave you to figure that one out.

It's true, they have to live here for at least a month before they say " loving Srilanka" this could be a gimmick played by the tourist boad or even Chinese. those two tourists look like Chinese. have a closer look. Just like trying to make the refugees 'Rohingas citizens ( why can't the wealthy middle easten countries take them. Chinese are trying so hard to bring more and more Chinese to settle in srilanka. Why can't this be stopped.??

SL good place for a vacation Monday, 05 February 2024 05:07 PM
Like in any other country, SL is a nice place to have a holiday. So long we are away from work or the normal routine back home, SL has the charm, personality

You can love Sri Lanka even if you don't carry the national flag with you!!! Sri Lanka is in the best sense of the word a wonderful, an extraordinary, even an impressive country! Its history, its culture, its philosophy, created in a paradise-like plant world, have given this country a special place among the ancient civilizations since ancient times! If you study the philosophy of this country and visit the central places of its effectiveness to this day, then your attention and admiration for what human spirit has produced on this green island grows!!! Even if the country is in distress due to a failed, criminal policy, precisely because of this and also because of the people, this country will always remain an excellent travel destination!!! It's not for nothing that I have traveled to Sri Lanka more than 50 times!

@Jeanne
They are her to see the beauty of our country which we under appreciate!

Jeanne Tuesday, 06 February 2024 02:36 AM
I get your point. However, I think it's a little hard to "appreciate" its "beauty" when the majority of people are focussed on keeping body and soul together in the current economic and political climate.

At first sight it looks as though only foreigners love Sri Lanka. We who are both citizens and residents here, love it differently. We belong here, and will not indulge in shallow flag-waving, although I appreciate the gestures made.

Well said, our gullibility has no limit, may be sky is the limit.

@Volker : I love your enthusiastic appreciation of this once beautiful country - unfortunately it is misplaced in the current context and, just like the caption is a highly insensitive comment.

Jeanne, You seems to be very unhappy with your life, you reap what you sow, try examining your head. Tourists are spending their own money after doing own research about the destination. And helping our economy along the way and we should be thankful for that. Read what Volker written here, which is a genuine response about Sri Lanka, most visitors praise our people and culture. It is so ironic that people are insulting visitors helping our country in difficult economic situation. There are so many places in the world tourists can spend holidays, yet they visit us and we should be thankful for that.

We got independence from the whiteman. Substantial parts of our population are living in whiteman countries. Others want to go there to live or work. Our people and country have an expectation of receiving and receiving whitemans aid, grants and benefits. Our economy depends on white people visiting us. Wha is this independence ? We could have remained under whitemans rule.

@ Volker Metzger. I have known Sri Lanka for 50 years, lived here for 30 years and have a company here. Like you, I am German and love Sri Lanka. It is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful countries. However, I can do without most of the locals.

Lived overseas for 40 years , SL has changed fundamentally, but still a beautiful country

Some tourists are enjoying their stay here and why not they are on holiday. That is all there is to it And Sri Lankan papers are full of superficial stuff like this in their reporting. May be the lack of press freedom has contributed to it fear of criticism, sad

tourists paradise Tuesday, 06 February 2024 05:52 PM
Many countries closer to Sri Lanka like Malaysia Thailand India Nepal Vietnam Singapore Indonesia etc. according to statistics recieved more tourists than Sri Lanka in 2023. The city where I live in the vicinity of Sri Lanka known as a tourists paradise recieves approx. 14 million tourists a year more than the numer of tourists visiting Sri Lanka annually.
