After the collapse of Soviet Union, India gradually distanced itself from Russia and started to move closer to the West specially towards America. And the new relationship was going on well and India was benefiting in defence procurements and in the economic and the political support it was receiving. But then something happened in September 2023 in the Canadian Parliament and things quickly snowballed in Canada and simultaneously in the USA. This really shocked India, India never experienced such level of external pressure in its recent history. India mistakenly thought that the pressure from the Americans and Canadians would start to abate but this didn’t happen , actually things have gone from bad to worse. So India has taken a dramatic decision to forge a closer link with Russia once again. This is the context for the surprising Modi’s visit to Russia when most countries are boycotting Russia over its invasion of Ukraine.
