This not something that we should be proud about but ashamed as mothers have to leave their families and be separated from the families.

What is there to proud about? Are we sending professional ladies? Most of of the female Domestic workers are low paid and are not treated humanely by their employers.

On a recent visit to Serangan Road, Singapore it was shocking to see that the number of our comely damsels plying their trade had increased. Maybe some solace is that their remittances are partially funding the fuel costs of the five to seven car convoys required for our parliamentarians

As a nation we should be ashamed of sending our mothers and sisters for untold hardship and suffering.

Yes as a nation but not as a corrupted country which is surviving on borrowed money.

@Eran Wicks,
We must have local job creation and job growth to utilize labor here by providing a descent living wage. The opportunity cost and social ramifications cannot be quantified monetarily.

We have to be ashamed and sad of thus status. This is not a good sign. They are our mothers, sister's and daughters going abroad to support there families.

Good news for the politicians. They can import some luxury vehicles for their use from hard earned dollars of these women.

It is a fundamental right for women to go aboard to work and earn money as men and that should not be stopped. If you believe all the women going overseas are doing housemaid jobs that is far from reality. There are many lankan women doing reasonably good jobs in places such as South Korea middle east.

In Sri Lanka and worldwide, there are more women than men. The future trend seems to be leaning towards more women in the workforce. From jobs like garbage collectors to doctors, all occupations in between are respectable because these people earn an honest living(without stealing). Kudos to every woman working and contributing to our economy. Balancing work, family, and household responsibilities is not easy.

All these workers going abroad with so much of sacrifices , mainly women, earn a little foreign exchange. However, the sad part of the story is that
the foreign exchange so earned are wasted by the crooked Politicians on foreign jaunts and pleasure trips.

Not all Sri Lankan women are domestic workers. Here in Australia, we have a young highly respected CEO Ms Shemara Wikramanayake of one of the largest banks in Australia is of Sri Lankan origin.

@one for the road. The CEO family fled Sri Lanka and got asylum in UK and subsequently migrated to Australia. It is unlikely she would have received the degree of empowerment in Lanka, that she and her parents received and benefited from by living in UK
