This post office is one of the historical and monumental ones built during the British Time in Ceylon. for our heritage protection and for our history, it is better to keep it as it is. I think these people are doing a great job for our country by this display. They are more concern to protect it than our people : thank you for that.

Heritage buildings are preserved all over the world. However, with the passing of time, most have to be repurposed whilst preserving and protecting the exterior facade and enhancing the beauty and appearance without destroying the ambiance. from the comments on the tourists' banners, I have a hunch they are British. wonder what the British Govt, would say if we went over there and told them what to do with one of their old buildings.

Make it a heritage-listed hotel. The external appearance cannot be altered. Allow the internals to be modified into a modern hotel. Otherwise, we will not have money to maintain the building and it will come tumbling down very soon.

All over the world, colonial history is being critically analyzed and processed! Sri Lanka has experienced such a long history spanning several centuries at the hands of European colonial powers, which was partly a humanly cruel anti-culture that also destroyed important culture and architecture!!! Even the last hundred years under the rule of the English were not primarily for Ceylon's advantage, but primarily benefited Great Britain! Against this background, it is difficult to understand why European tourists, possibly English, think they have to protest and intervene in the very own (banal) domestic political decisions of the Sri Lankan government!!! You can also send your mail from other locations!

This is an iconic building a land mark that stands out among the verdant environment ...the use of this should be what it stands for ,just not a facade to advertise what it was ..Nothing seem to be of value today unless its can generate dollars , not a value we wold want to pass down to our future generations ..

@ Volker Metzger. Where would Sri Lanka be today without the British? There would be no infrastructure (roads, railways), no health system, no education and no independent courts. Although the British benefited from Ceylon for at least 100 years in their 150 years, Sri Lanka benefited far more from that time. Even today, many Sri Lankans would still like to be part of Great Britain instead of being ruled by corrupt and looting criminals.

Unknown to them these tourists are being exploited by some parties with vested interest by foisting the banner on them. Given that most European tourists to Sri Lankan these days are from Russia, the majority of whom could only manage a few words in English, would have just obliged to hold the banner up not knowing what it said.

If we want to attract more tourists we could start by pressure washing our pavements, there's so much moss because of the constant rains. Saw school kids slip and fall today. Cannot even see the original colour of the pavements blocks anymore.

Nuwara Eliya and the rest, have turned into a complete eyesore. Nothing colonial or English about it anymore. More like a ‘Godey built up’ settlement than anything else. Which part of “little England” didn’t the city planners and local government understand is beyond me. Jokers.
