Following a concept of the Colombo Mayoress, Rosy Senanayake, and the expertise and guidance of the Librarian of Colombo Public Library, Waruni Gangabadarachchi, an abundant yield of vegetable was obtained from the library compound. A vegetable cultivation program was recently launched to educate the public on how to grow their own vegetable in order to face the future food scarcity. Several people incliluding the Library committee member Ransiri Ageygunawardane was participated the project. Pix by Kushan Pathiraja

Great initiative and an example to the entire government service. Well done ! This also shows Sri Lanka is blessed and anything can be grown even in the middle of the city ! So no need for anyone to go hungry in this great country !

Entertaining model, but is it sustainable in Colombo? Where is available non-forest land for it? Clearing land of existing forest vegetation causes climate changes. Is the Mayoress pushing for causing harm to climate? She made diabolical fuss about the Dance party event as Lotus Tower, so this token garden has to be assessed knowing Rosy is more about show and big talk. All around in the rural areas farmers are growing more systematically, and for earning a living. If librarian rather than agriculture department staff organise for laborer for field work - it seems overall an unsustainable gimmick.

Has the Librarian given up her salary and started on growing veg. If she still takes a salary, isn't it better to give up her day job and grow veg. As usual Rosy likes to get into media and we know her trick to say 'I am here' when she is provided with a super high salary with allowances.

"Against subsidy for religion" .... !!!What is that all about? Anyway - what an absolutely negative comment. Of course the cultivation is sustainable.Do you know the meaning of the word 'sustainable' ? That same plot of land can be cultivated continuously if one has the will to do it - and the labour, of course. One just has to rotate the crops, and add compost and fertiliser as needed ... especially compost.

People blame Gotabhaya for coming up with organic initiative but most of them adopted it and are happy about it. The mistake Gota did was that he tried to change things overnight rather than by changing gradually. In the longer term, we must get used to organic fertiliser and collectively defeat the chemical fertiliser mafia run by few Colombo elites.

Best harvest or benefit to the nation and Colombo is when the number of council members Municipal Councils. The Mayoresses exclusiveness with funding this activity by way of the Colombo Library and then objecting to new Business in Colombo at the Lotus Tower shows how corrupt the Municipal Council is.

@Bob Dobbs: Seems you've fallen head over heels for this romanticised attempt at a hobby farm. Our country has an unsustainable number of local councilors Bob. Are you aware, yes? The president does a lame, cut the number if half and put to a referendum if the parliament wants to keep the bloat. Number should be made a quarter. Then the Colombo Municipal Council who provided for this folly should be gone too. Complete waste for collected fee and taxes. Country is money printing end to end, and persons doing it is getting money from thin air/printed. Better a thousand times the hard working farmer than this bullshit attempt using the public purse by the Colombo Municipal council. Maybe Bob you donate money for continuing it, after selling your house, so the rest of us don't watch our money being wasted on it. Maybe Bob others will feel positive for your sacrifice like that, while most will just snigger.
