University lecturers, civil society movements, political groups and students joined today in Colombo, for the protest march organized by the University lecturers. The protesters demand that the government spend 6% of the GDP towards the countries education with the main slogan of the protestors being “ Save state education”. why not private universities will these people help those who cant get to the university because they didn't have the required marks from 1 or 2 points to get higher education

Salary is the only cause these lecturers are fighting for. everything else is a shield to protect from public anger.

Samaratunga I think has not visited any state university to see first hand the facilities available for students to study and staff working environment. We have one of the worst infrastructure facilities in universities in South Asia.

Are we to continue in this state of affairs into the next century???

Yet another effort to start a struggle like "Arab Spring" in SL by defeated,bankrupt political parties. Few powerful INGO's funding this struggle. In UK, USA ,or in Europe a university student has to pay for each unit . I think government should introduce such a system to SL . Then the government no need to allocate money for universities and FUTA and IUSF can manage and administrate universities independently. And then no more marches,rallies or strikes .

ok, lets say you are correct because it is almost impossible to change the views of idiots who see all the problems with their superior political views and always watch the state news only.
but tell me which demand of lecturers bad for the country, and which of that if realizes affects your son/daughters future.

So you say that salary is the only thing they are fighting for. What about the demand for 6% of GDP for education? Is that something you cannot get behind and support? Given all the corruption and wastage, is 6% in the name of your country's future not a justifiable demand. As those who benefited from a free education system, I believe its everyone's duty to safeguard that privilege for future generations.

asking 6% or more for the education is always, regardless of who ask that. Because education is the stength of a country which produces skilled work force and ntrepreneurs.
But in a way though I support the FUTA strike, I know these lecturers are rich in knowledge and cunning. I can honestly say they put the 6% GDP thing to cover up their personal demands and gather support from mass audience. Just think if they hadn't put the 6% thingy and just asked for salary raise you and me are not going to support.
They planned well.
