Mostly this could be an oxygen issue, but we cant neglect other possibilities. However, we will never be able to find the reason because the lack of efficient mechanism for scientific investigations in Sri Lanka. This situation leads to wrong decisions, thereby resulting monetary losses and invaluable losses of resources and national treasures. This is quite common in most fields, specially in environmental, health, agricultural, archeological and law enforcement fields.

Algae typically overgrows when there are too many nitrates in the water. This could either be from effluents entering the water somewhere or fertilizer being used around getting washed into the lake. Either way when the algae overgrow they take up all of the Oxygen in the lake and the fish literally starve of Oxygen.

Fish cannot come to the surface and breathe as they need Oxygen rich water to pass over their gills.

The Beira lake needs a good clean up, the water is polluted and lacks oxygen. Why not have them examine the water quality periodically, say weekly to check the condition of the water as done in most other countries . Just look at the pictures how dirty the shore line looks with all sorts of muck. Clean sand must be introduced to the 'shore line' to make it attractive.

Algae produce oxygen.The process called photosynthesis.Many fish feed on algae.The explanation is not scientific.
