An Ukrainian woman who wore a t-shirt printed with a picture of the Buddha changed her attire after being requested to do so by a monk in the Unawatuna area. The monk had informed the tourist that it offended Buddhism. Pix by D.G.Sugathapala-Unawatuna

Very well said indeed! But it is a sensible request by the monk for the sake of the safety of the tourist herself. There is a good chance that she might be subject to harm as there are many violent simpletons out there that do not understand an aorta of Buddhist philosophy. They are however the first to violently defend their perception of it even though their actions and intentions reflect the very antitheses of what Buddhism is about.

Muhammed is different issue, his face image never written since his era, how ever the buddha image was written according to buddhist and they worshiping as idol.

Its sad to see how intolerable Buddhists in our Country are.
Where as Buddhism actually teaches calm and tolerance.
When I talk to people from other countries about the civil war, the 1st question they ask is, isnt your country's population 70% Buddhist? and doesn't Buddhism teach not to resort violence?
the root of all our problems is that we are not tolerant, whether its the war, or simple matters like wearing a t-shirt.
This not only applies to buddhist, but also to people of other religions. Though I've noticed that Christians are more tolerant and forgiving.

No one said he is a god here. Even though he was a philosopher he was much more than a god, so he should be treated with utmost respect. So that’s why the action was taken properly. So its good.

but we SL have disgraced the Buddha more.talking to an MC worker recently in Dehiwela area the guy told that to prevent people from dumbing garbage everywhere, they had been instructed to put up Buddha statues at these garabage dumping sites.

People should be free to wear whatever they want, whenever they want. There is nothing in Buddhism which says it is an offence to wear a t-shirt with the Buddha's image on it. All other religions, notably, Hinduism and Christianity, which actually have Gods, have all sorts of merchandise printed with the image of their Gods and Saints on t-shirts and other items of clothing. You never hear the Catholic Church or Hindu Sect telling people to remove them. People wish to express their religious or cultural beliefs and values through different forms. If it is in the format of wearing clothes with their cultural and religious dieties on it, well so be it.
I find it far more offensive to see Buddha statues being placed in every nook and corner, next to drains, garbage dumps, etc. That's offensive - but hey, if I don't like it, I just look away.10 75

The Rev. Monk is very sensible. It is the best way to prevent the use of the image of Lord Buddha, than remanding these tourist who does this un intentionally.

completely agree with Legal talk. I personally don't believe this t shirt is offensive at all. People (including sri lankans) buy similar tshirts from places like Thailand all the time.
I also feel Vesak cards are much more offensive than this tshirt.
A completely commercialised rip off using a Buddhist holy day is much worse than a foreign visitor trying to embrace the culture of the place she visits in my humble opinion3 20

Doubt whether the Ukranian lady showing off Lord Buddha's image on her back is displaying love and devotion to Buddha unlike the Catholics and Hindus you talk about.. She's merely displaying her fondness for the design with stupendous naivity.
