ICC wants SLC election within six months

The International Cricket Council (ICC) on Monday issued an ultimate to its Sri Lankan counterpart--Sri Lanka Cricket to hold elections within six months or face suspension.
“The Board agreed to allow a representative of the Sri Lankan Sports Minister to sit as an observer to the ICC Board and Full Council, but requested that elections for Sri Lanka Cricket are held within six months, failing which SLC’s Membership status would be considered,” ICC said in a statement.

SLC’s voting rights at the ICC remain suspended while the government-appointed committee is in charge and likely to hold up payments due to SLC in escrow in the event of non-compliance to the ICC’s request.

Sri Lanka Cricket ran into trouble after Court of Appeal stayed election of office bearers set for May 31 after considering a petitioned filed by Nishantha Ranatunga challenging the election process.

Sports Minister Faiszer Musthapha put SLC under an Competent Authority till the fresh elections are conducted. The court order was subsequently lifted after Attorney Generals’ Department took an undertaking to present a roadmap to conduct cricket election.
The case will be taken up for hearing on Wednesday (July 4).
