By the numbers: Records broken as Starc, Warner and Kohli hit new heights

Mitchell Starc has smashed a Cricket World Cup record among bowlers, while David Warner and Virat Kohli also reached key milestones in the Australia and India clash.

Left-arm quick Mitchell Starc became the fastest bowler to reach 50 wickets in ICC Men's Cricket World Cups as records tumbled in Australia's clash with India.

Fastest bowler to 50 wickets
Starc claimed the wicket-taking record with six innings to spare when dismissing India opener Ishan Kishan for a golden duck, to hit 50 wickets in 19 innings at Cricket World Cups and smash the previous record held by Lasith Malinga.

The Sri Lanka speedster took 25 innings to reach 50 wickets in Cricket World Cups, with another Australia pacer in Glenn McGrath and Sri Lanka spinner Muttiah Muralitharan next best to hit the mark from 30 innings.

Starc also holds the record for the most wickets in a single edition of the Cricket World Cup after taking 27 wickets in 10 matches in 2019.

Mohammed Shami is the best-placed of the current bowlers to threaten Starc’s record, with the India pacer sitting on 31 wickets from 11 Cricket World Cup matches.

The 33-year-old was left out of India’s line-up to face Australia in their Cricket World Cup 2023 opener but will hope for further opportunities as the tournament progresses.

Fastest bowler to 1000 runs
Australia secured another record when Warner became the fastest player to reach 1,000 runs in Cricket World Cups after hitting the mark in only 19 innings.

The left-hander notched 1,000 runs in Cricket World Cups while scoring 41 in Australia’s opening match of the 2023 edition but was unable to prevent their loss to India.

Warner however claimed the run-scoring record from India legend Tendulkar, as well as former South Africa skipper de Villiers, after they each took 20 innings to reach 1,000 runs in Cricket World Cups.

Tendulkar still holds the record for the most runs at the showpiece event with 2,278 runs in 45 matches in six Cricket World Cups from 1992 to 2011.

Warner now has a total of 1,033 runs after appearing in the three Cricket World Cups since 2015.

Rohit Sharma could equal Warner’s record when India plays Afghanistan on 11 October, with the opener currently 22 runs short of 1,000 runs from 18 innings at Cricket World Cups.

The India captain failed to add to his career tally in the victory over Australia after being trapped in front for a duck off the bowling of Josh Hazlewood.

Virat Kohli (85) combined with KL Rahul (97*) to steer India toward the modest target of 200 against Australia, as the India superstar moved into the top-10 for most runs at Cricket World Cups.

The 34-year-old now has 1,115 runs at the 50-over tournaments and could climb up to fourth place at this year’s event with 111 runs needed to overtake West Indies great Brian Lara.

Kohli’s innings against Australia also saw the chase master surpass Tendulkar for the most runs in successful pursuits in ODIs with a total of 5,517.

Australia claimed three early ducks to leave the hosts reeling on 2/3, the first time India have lost as many of their top-four batters without scoring in all of their 1,042 ODIs.

Kohli and Rahul then rescued India with a 165-run stand that is now the second-highest India partnership for the fourth or lower wicket at Cricket World Cups.

The critical stand also became the highest India partnership against Australia at the 50-over tournaments. (ICC)
