Accidents on the rise this festive season - Fireworks injuries cost the country

In addition to firecracker related incidents, doctors have observed a rise in motor accidents, domestic accidents and accidents involving alcohol consumption, during this festive season.

“Most of these accidents are preventable, especially the ones involving young people,” Dr. Kapila Banduthilaka of the National Eye Hospital said.

“The treatment of a patient with a firecracker related eye injury will cost between Rs. 200,000 to 300,000. The truth is that sometimes we don’t even have the necessary drugs and equipment at the National Eye Hospital. We too become helpless,” Dr. K. A. Salvin said.
