Anunayake of the Asgiri Chapter Anamaduwe Sri Dammadassi Nayaka Thera lamented that the Buddhist festivals lacked the participation of tamed elephants. The Thera said that public attention has only been focused on one elephant which was returned to its native country.  

"Our culture must be protected. There are efforts to destroy our culture," the Thera said.
