The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) said as many as 1,000 Sri Lankan mercenaries are in the Russia-Ukraine war front according to narration by those who fled back to Sri Lanka.
The CID also said investigations are underway regarding a person who earns as much as Rs.3 million for a soldier sent to the war front.
A former Sri Lankan military officer operating from Russia is coordinating recruitments in liaison with retired military officers in Sri Lanka, according to the CID. Another person called ‘Ramesh’ is also involved in the operation. The agreement signed in this case is in the Russian language.
The CID said three ex-Sri Lankan military personnel who were on the Russian war front had returned to Sri Lanka.
