Though the government had made an effort to introduce some positive changes to the constitution through the 22nd Amendment, it has failed to fulfill the people’s aspirations fully, the National Movement for Social Justice ( NMSJ) said yesterday.

NMSJ Head and former Speaker Karu Jayasuriya said the proposed legislation does not bring drastic reforms which people want.

“People of this nation want drastic changes as soon as possible. However one cannot agree with the transitional period which is proposed in the legislation. It is proposed that the constitutional amendments will come into effect only when the term of the incumbent President comes to an end. This is not what people want,” Mr. Jayasuriya said.

He said all political parties should get together in bringing in political reforms.
