44 Indian poachers and seven multi-day trawlers seized

A group of 12 Indian fishermen poaching in Sri Lankan waters were arrested and two multi-day trawlers seized by the Navy on Saturday night during a raid in the seas off Talaimannar. 

A senior navy official said they had arrested 44 Indian poachers and seized seven multi-day trawlers over the last two weeks.   


He said the fisher folk in the North were staging continual protests against Indian Fishermen involved in poaching and causing extensive damage to fishing gear of Sri Lankan fishermen.   


The group of Indian poachers were handed over to the Mannar Fisheries Inspector’s Office for further action.
