54,000 policemen to ensure security during the presidential election period



Some 54,000 policeman are to be deployed for duty at this year’s presidential election, Senior DIG Elections, Community Police, Tourism Asanka Karawita told a media briefing yesterday.   

Mr. Karawita said around 3200 police mobile units will be in place to safeguard 45 counting centers on September 21.   

In addition some 1800 laborers have been hired to remove posters, cutouts and banners according to him.   

Some 169, 358 illegal cutouts have been removed while 61,062 posters have been confiscated. In addition 613 banners have been removed.   

Intelligence reports have been called for on the security of all candidates and security will be provided to them based on these reports. Police protection is ensured for all rallies.
