A new political culture will dawn in Sri Lanka with the enactment of legislation to control election expenses, Mass Media Minister Dullas Alahapperuma said.

He told the media that a relentless campaign carried out by the National Election Commission, election monitoring NGOs like the PAFFREL, CMEV, CaFFE, and civil society for decades to restrict election expenses has borne fruit with the government’s decision to introduce legislation to control election expenses.

“President Gotabaya Rajapaksa has sanctioned the enactment of legal provisions to the election law to restrict election expenses by political parties and candidates and accordingly he has instructed the Legal Draftsman to draft necessary laws,” Minister Alahapperuma said.
