Security in Colombo was tightened last weekend as information was received that a certain group was trying to take over universities, Presidential Advisor MP Vajira Abeywardene said yesterday.

“Intelligence units have received information that a certain group was trying to take over universities. This is the real reason for the recent tightening of security,” the MP said while highlighting that the other rumours with regard to tightening of security were false.

Also the MP said steps would be taken to introduce laws to curb psychological warfare. “Those who bombed the World Trade Centre in New York got into the aircraft without any weapons. However they launched the attack during the flight. Their minds were filled with extremist ideologies when they got into the plane. Therefore laws should be in place to deal with people who subscribe to extremist ideologies,” the MP said.

“People should be aware and vigilant of persons with extremist ideologies. We are not asking the people to act with fright but to be vigilant on those who try to disrupt stability,” he said.
