A national government could be a possibility in the near future as including some ministers want it, UNP Deputy Leader Ruwan Wijewardene said over the weekend.
Speaking to UNP activists in Ampara and Moneragala Districts, Mr. Wijewardene said some ministers want a national government comprising all parties and therefore such an eventuality may be on the cards.
“Many including some Ministers want a new national movement comprising all political parties. There could be a change in the composition of Parliament soon. Therefore UNP should be ready for such an eventuality,” he said.
“Some Ministers are currently conferring with our Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe in Parliament. These Ministers have informed him that they cannot remain in this government any longer. Therefore the UNP, SJB, and other political parties should get together.
The assistance of an experienced politician such as the UNP leader will be needed to build up the nation,” he added.
Speaking to journalists in Ampara, Mr. Wijewardene said it is not clear whether UNP will contest future elections on its own or through a grand alliance.
He also said the situation in Sri Lanka will deteriorate further next year. “There will be a scarcity of food. The dollar crisis will also remain as there will be no funds to purchase aviation fuel. Planes will not operate through Sri Lanka. The tourist industry will be affected. Sri Lanka might not be able to generate much-needed dollars,” he added.
Mr. Wijewardene said the UNP Leader will focus on national-level issues while he and others in the party will focus on reorganizing the party at the grass-root level. “ We shall be coming to Uva at least once a month and will also visit all other districts as well at the same time,” he said.
