The Parliamentary Council has received the nomination of Acting Solicitor General Sanjay Rajaratnam as the new Attorney General, the Speaker’s office said yesterday.
A spokesman for the Speaker’s office told Daily Mirror that the Parliamentary Council had received Mr. Rajaratnam’s name as the new Attorney General.
“The date has not been fixed for the council to meet. But, it may meet next week to decide on the nomination,” the spokesman said.
The Attorney General’s post will be vacant as the present Attorney General Dappula de Livera is to retire at the end of this month. The Parliamentary Council, chaired by the Speaker, is the constitutional body for consideration and conformation of such appointments. It was established in terms of the 20th Amendment incorporated into the Constitution last year under the present government in place of the Constitutional Council.
