All May Day rallies have been cancelled as a precautionary measure to curb the spread of COVID-19, Army Commander Shavendra Silva said.

He said the decision was reached during a meeting held with party leaders at the National Operations Centre for the prevention of COVID-19.

The Public Health Inspectors’ Union earlier requested all political parties and professionals to suspend all rallies to be held on May Day, considering the COVID-19 situation in the country.
PHI Union President Upul Rohana predicted a definite rise of COVID-19 cases over the coming weeks, due to the irresponsible behaviour of people during the festive season.
“At this point of time, we can’t afford to take any risks, as we have been shown signs of a huge surge in COVID-19 cases in the country,” he said.

Meanwhile, he said Sri Lanka was in a critical situation in terms of the spread of Coronavirus.

  • The consequence of the bad behaviour of people during festive season will be experienced in another two or three weeks
