Alleged attempt on former Nuwara Eliya Mayor’s life Accused acquitted after 27 years

A group of five accused who stood indicted with attempted murder and causing damage to property by hurling hand grenades on the residence of  former Mayor of Nuwara Eliya Nalin Thilaka Herath were acquitted by Nuwara Eliya High Court Judge Darshika Wimalasiri.  

The accused were alleged to have perpetrated the attack on the mayor’s residence on political rivalry in 1996 and they stood trial before the High Court for 27 years until they were acquitted on September 21.
One of the accused had died and the trial against other four accused Rohitha Ananda, Sumanasiri Munaweera, Nihal Perera, and Nimal Vitharana had  proceeded.
