Days after he was slammed by the President, Director General of the Department of Archaeology Prof. Anura Manatunga tendered his resignation letter to the Ministry Secretary,  “The Director General of Archaeology has sent his resignation letter to the Ministry Secretary and I also received a copy of the letter.

No reason has been given for the resignation,” Minister of Buddhasasana, Religious, and Cultural Affairs Vidura Wickramanayaka told Daily Mirror.

Last week, President Ranil Wickremesinghe reprimanded the DG over an issue pertaining to the allocation of lands to an archaeological site.

The President asked him “Are you trying to teach me history? Or do you want me to teach you?” when the officials met with the President regarding an issue over an archaeological site.
