The Monaragala Division Crime Investigation Unit has initiated investigations to arrest an Army Colonel in connection with a robbery on June 23.
A gang of seven individuals posing as officials of the Defence Ministry had entered a house and taken away cash and jewellery valued more than Rs.1.6 million and seven SIM cards. They had searched the house under the pretext of information received that items dug up from a treasure had been hidden in the house.
During investigations the police arrested on Thursday (26) two suspects and two cars used by them for the robbery. Police said they received information that an Army Colonel in service was the kingpin behind the robbery and that he would be arrested soon.
One of the suspects in custody was from Midigama area and one of them was a former airman. Police said three others wanted in connection with the incident would be arrested soon.
The suspects in custody were to be produced before the Wellawaya District Judge and Magistrate Eranga Dissanayake.
