Former Director of the Institute of National Security Studies, Asanga Abeyagoonasekera who was arrested upon arrival in the country at the Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) had been released on bail.
Police detained him while returning to Sri Lanka from Doha at the arrival terminal following the issuing of an arrest warrant taken by the Inland Revenue Department related to a case against him.
He was handed over to police custody after initially being apprehended by immigration and emigration department officials at the Airport. He was produced before the Negombo Magistrates Court yesterday and released on two sureties of Rs. 1 million rupees each.
The case is to be taken up again on the 9th of August. Police said Asanga Abeyagoonasekera was arrested pursuant to an open warrant issued in connection with an action initiated by the Department of Inland Revenue.
Abeyagoonasekera is the son of Ossie Abeyagoonasekera, former leader of the Sri Lanka Mahajana Pakshaya (SLMP).
