Bodies of two young missing girls washed ashore

The bodies of the two young girls missing of the three young girls and a 21-year-old female who were swept away by waves while they were sea bathing in the sea in the Weligama Beach Park on January 23 had washed ashore, Weligama Police said.   


The bodies discovered were of the young girls aged 12 and 16 respectively.   


The body of the 16-year-old girl washed ashore on the Weligama beach on January 23 evening and the other body at about 3.45 am yesterday (24).   

The puberty ceremony of the 12-year-old girl was held on January 22 in Mudugamuwa area in Weligama and the relatives who participated had gone swimming in the sea with the girls.   


A group of youth rescued the 14-year-old girl and the female aged 21, and they were taken to Matara General Hospital for further treatment after admitting them to Walana hospital.   


The two bodies were taken to Matara General Hospital and Coroner B. S. G. Wickremasinghe of Welipitiya was to conduct the post-mortem examination yesterday.   


Police Sergeant B. L. D. Silva (21067) will conduct the investigation on the instructions of Weligama Police Inspector D. M. Abeysekara.   


As more than 20 people have died in the sea in the Weligama Beach Park during the last ten years, the residents requested to display a warning board in the area.
